Open-Source Devices & Biological Resources

FeniceLab is dedicated to making scientific exploration more approachable by developing open-source, low-cost equipment and providing essential biological resources. Our mission is to break down barriers in research and innovation, so anyone—regardless of resources or technical background—can learn, explore, and create.

Why Open-Source

Transparency

By openly sharing designs, protocols, and genetic tools, we invite everyone to explore, replicate, and refine each resource

Collaboration

An open framework encourages feedback from a global community of makers, scientists, and enthusiasts—everyone can contribute.

Affordability

We strive to keep these tools and materials as affordable as possible, while also ensuring fair compensation for the time and resources that make them possible.

What We Develop

These are the projects we’re currently working on, but our ambition doesn’t stop here. We welcome anyone with fresh ideas and the desire to experiment to join us and initiate new projects. At FeniceLab, we believe in constant evolution—each concept we nurture today lays the groundwork for tomorrow’s breakthroughs. Our aim is to assemble the necessary tools for creating a fully modular, multidisciplinary lab accessible to everyone.

Open-Source Hardware

Thermocycler
A cost-effective device for precise temperature control—ideal for PCR and other thermal cycling experiments.

Electrophoresis Chamber
An easy-to-build setup for DNA, RNA, or protein analysis. By sharing blueprints and assembly guides, we invite everyone to replicate and adapt.

Fermentor
Designed to cultivate microorganisms efficiently, this open-source fermentor supports a range of projects, from biotechnology to food production.

Incubator
A reliable, low-cost unit that maintains precise temperature and humidity conditions—perfect for growing bacterial or fungal cultures.

Biological Resources

Culture Media
Low-cost growth media for bacteria, yeasts, and fungi, simplifying both educational and research applications.

Microbial Strains
From E. coli to various yeasts and molds, these strains empower biotech experiments and foster greater self-sufficiency.

Plasmids
Open-source genetic constructs that let you produce crucial enzymes—like Taq polymerase—directly in your own lab, cutting costs significantly.

Reagents & Protocols
Accessible formulas, buffers, and kits for tasks like DNA extraction, bacterial transformation, and PCR, complete with clear instructions to help you carry out experiments with confidence—perfect for newcomers and experienced researchers alike.

A Flexible Approach: From DIY to Ready-to-Use

FeniceLab wants to offer open-source devices and biological resources in multiple forms, ensuring everyone can engage at a level that matches their experience and needs. For those who enjoy a hands-on challenge, we provide the microcontroller code, schematics, and detailed component lists so you can build everything yourself from the ground up. If you prefer a more guided approach, we supply partially assembled kits—including optional 3D-printed enclosures—that you can customize and finish on your own. And for those who need immediate functionality, fully assembled, ready-to-use devices are also available. The same flexibility applies to our biological resources: you can either acquire pre-made reagents, culture media, microbial strains, and plasmids directly from us, or follow our step-by-step guides to produce them autonomously whenever possible. By sharing every protocol and design in an open-source manner, we empower individuals and communities to adapt, refine, and replicate each solution, cultivating an ever-expanding ecosystem of accessible, low-cost tools that support scientific exploration at every level.

Join the Journey & Help Us

All of our projects are works in progress, constantly evolving as we gather feedback and refine prototypes. If you’re passionate about research, design, or tinkering, we invite you to join us in shaping these initiatives. Your contributions—whether in the form of coding, testing, improving documentation, or sharing fresh ideas—play a vital role in turning early-stage concepts into fully functional solutions.

If you’d like to provide financial support for a particular project that resonates with you, feel free to make a targeted donation. In this way, you can directly empower the initiative you care about most. By collaborating and sharing resources, we can keep costs down, accelerate development, and bring accessible science to a broader community. Let’s build and innovate together.
